Golden Globes: Will the Stars Party Tonight?

George Clooney and other nominees say they'll find out about the awards like everyone else tonight – on TV

No dresses, no big parties – so what will this year's Golden Globes stars be doing Sunday night when the winner's are announced in a press conference?

"I'm going to eat a huge bowl of pasta," Allison Janney told PEOPLE at the BAFTA Awards Season Tea Party in Beverly Hills. "I don't have to worry about fitting into a gown tomorrow."

But the Juno actress, whose film is nominated for best motion picture comedy or musical, said she's not ruling out the possibility of spending the evening with her castmates. "We may get together ... and watch the press conference. And if something good happens we can all go out and spontaneously celebrate somewhere. We're going to just make it up as we go."

Equally low-key, George Clooney, a nominee for best actor in a movie drama for Michael Clayton, "will be watching Bonanza on color television," his rep, Stan Rosenfield, said in a statement.

With the writers' strike continuing, this year's Golden Globes will be presented by a panel of TV hosts and journalists, including Entertainment Tonight's Mary Hart, The Insider's Lara Spencer, Jim Moret of Inside Edition, Juliana Rancic and CNN's Brooke Anderson. Before the telecast (9 p.m., ET), NBC will air a two-hour Dateline special featuring new interviews with nominated celebrities.

A Dressed Down Night

While the official afterparties have been canceled – and the celebrations curbed – many celebrities say they are reveling in their own ways – just minus all the gowns and glamour.

"I'm so glad I didn't have to worry about a dress," nominee Patricia Arquette told NBC News in a new interview. Instead, the Medium star joked she'd be happy to sit on her couch, in her sweats.

Same goes for The Office's Angela Kinsey, who is pregnant.

"I'm going to be home in my sweatpants," she told PEOPLE at the Boom Boom Room's Wonderland suite in Los Angeles. "Not as exciting as last year, but also good in a different way. I had a dress from A Pea in the Pod [picked out] ... but I'll just save it for the next thing."

Focus On the Strike

The politics of the event were on the forefront of Rumer Willis's mind – this year's Miss Golden Globe.

"You can wear a pretty dress any time," she told PEOPLE at Access Hollywood's "Stuff You Must ..." Gift Lounge in Los Angeles. Explained Willis: "It's more about supporting people, your peers, and the other people that are struggling right now."

Also affected by the writers' strike, the People's Choice Awards aired sans celebrities on Jan. 8, in a pretaped "newsmagazine" format hosted by Queen Latifah, and earned only 6 million viewers. Last year's ceremony drew in 11.3 million viewers – a drastic difference that many say illustrates the deleterious effect the two-month-old strike has had on the entertainment industry.

Among the films in competition for Golden Globes this year, Atonement leads the field with seven nominations. Other key nominees include its stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street's Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

In other plans demonstrating how fragile her mental state is at the moment, friends report the troubled popstar has also considered faking her own death in order to reinvent herself.

A pal tells the News Of The World, "She's been discussing all these wacky plans to reinvent her life. She has discussed in depth a fake death, moving abroad and even plastic surgery. It is scary to hear her romanticise about these insane plans.

"She believes she could spend six months away and make a comeback as Britney the world's best mother."

Britney has also talked about how important her new man, paparazzi boss Adnan Ghalib, is to her now.

She reportedly told a doubting relative of his over the phone, "We're taking care of each other. He's the only one who understands me. It's serious."

After making his presence felt at the music release of Nikhil's film, Shah Rukh showed up at the film's premiere on Wednesday night with his leg obviously in pain. The star had injured his leg while rehearsing his steps for the Screen awards. "It was really very nice of him," says Nikhil. "The injury was an old one. But he hurt himself in the same leg while rehearsing for his performance at the awards." Shah Rukh couldn't stay for the whole film. Nevertheless, promised to catch up with My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves in a couple of days.

Warning on Stealthy Windows Virus

Security experts are warning about a stealthy Windows virus that steals login details for online bank accounts.

In the last month, the malicious program has racked up about 5,000 victims - most of whom are in Europe.

Many are falling victim via booby-trapped websites that use vulnerabilities in Microsoft's browser to install the attack code.

Experts say the virus is dangerous because it buries itself deep inside Windows to avoid detection.

Old tricks

The malicious program is a type of virus known as a rootkit and it tries to overwrite part of a computer's hard drive called the Master Boot Record (MBR).

This is where a computer looks when it is switched on for information about the operating system it will be running.

"If you can control the MBR, you can control the operating system and therefore the computer it resides on," wrote Elia Florio on security company Symantec's blog.

Mr Florio pointed out that many viruses dating from the days before Windows used the Master Boot Record to get a grip on a computer.

Once installed the virus, dubbed Mebroot by Symantec, usually downloads other malicious programs, such as keyloggers, to do the work of stealing confidential information.

Most of these associated programs lie in wait on a machine until its owner logs in to the online banking systems of one of more than 900 financial institutions.

The Russian virus-writing group behind Mebroot is thought to have created the torpig family of viruses that are known to have been installed on more than 200,000 systems. This group specialises in stealing bank login information.

Security firm iDefense said Mebroot was discovered in October but started to be used in a series of attacks in early December.

Between 12 December and 7 January, iDefense detected more than 5,000 machines that had been infected with the program.

Analysis of Mebroot has shown that it uses its hidden position on the MBR as a beachhead so it can re-install these associated programs if they are deleted by anti-virus software.

Although the password-stealing programs that Mebroot installs can be found by security software, few commercial anti-virus packages currently detect its presence. Mebroot cannot be removed while a computer is running. (I've never heard of such a virus).

Independent security firm GMER has produced a utility that will scan and remove the stealthy program.

Computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 that are not fully patched are all vulnerable to the virus.
